Push-to-Start Key Replacement: How It Works
By Mega Lock And Key · MD Locksmith License #394 ·
A push-to-start smart key is replaced by programming a new fob to the car so it is recognized when you press the start button; a mobile locksmith with the right software can do this at the car for most makes, including many newer models, and cuts the hidden emergency blade at the same visit.
What a smart key does
The car detects the smart key when it is inside the cabin and lets you start the engine with the button. Each fob is programmed to that one car. A fob from another car, or one that has not been programmed, will not start it.
What you need
- Photo ID and the registration or title
- The VIN (on your insurance card, registration, or the lower driver-side windshield)
- Any working fob you still have, which can make the job simpler
How the replacement works
| You still have one fob | All fobs lost | |
|---|---|---|
| Programming | New fob added alongside the existing one | New fob programmed; lost fobs removed where the system allows |
| Emergency blade | Cut to match | Cut from the key code or the lock |
| Tow needed? | No | Usually not with a mobile locksmith |
Newer models
Many newer cars, especially European models, are programmed through the manufacturer's online systems. Mega Lock And Key has dealer authorization and dealer-level software for most makes, so these keys are usually programmed at the car too. We confirm by VIN on the phone. See push-to-start smart keys.
