What does transponder key programming involve?
A transponder key has a small chip in the head that the car reads before the engine will start. Most cars from the late 1990s on use one. A copy cut at a hardware counter can open the door but will not start the car until its chip is programmed to the vehicle.
We carry the blanks and programming equipment in the van, so the key is cut, the chip is paired to your car, and both are tested before we leave. If you still have a working key, we can add a spare; if every key is gone, we make a new one from the VIN and the lock.
What's included
- Spare transponder keys added to your car
- New key when all keys are lost
- Old lost keys erased from the car where the system allows
- Key, remote, and start tested before we leave

Transponder key programming questions.
How do I know if my key has a transponder chip?
Most keys made since the late 1990s have one. A thick plastic head is a clue. Tell us the year, make, and model and we can confirm on the phone.
Will a hardware-store copy start my car?
Usually not. It can open the doors, but the chip has to be programmed to your car before the engine will start.
Can you program a transponder key without the original?
Yes. When all keys are lost we make a new key from the VIN or the lock and program it to the car.
Can you program a key I bought online?
Sometimes. Many online keys use the wrong chip or poor blades. Call with the part details before you buy and we will tell you honestly.
