Smart Locks: What to Know Before You Install One

By Mega Lock And Key · MD Locksmith License #394 ·

A smart lock replaces or upgrades your deadbolt so the door opens with a code or a phone; before you install one, check that your door is aligned so the bolt throws freely, choose a model with a backup key, and plan for battery changes.

Door fit matters

The most common smart lock problem is a bolt that drags on the strike because the door is out of line. The motor strains, the batteries drain, and the lock jams. We adjust the strike so the bolt throws freely before we set up codes.

Keep a backup key

Choose a lock with a key cylinder. We can key it to match your other doors where the keyway allows.

Rentals

Smart locks make tenant turnover easier: delete the old codes and set new ones. Keep the key cylinder rekeyed too. See landlord rekeys and smart lock installation.

Quick answers.

Are smart locks secure?

A good smart deadbolt is as strong as a standard one. Choose a Grade 1 or Grade 2 model and keep the software updated.

What if the batteries die?

Most locks warn you first, and most have a key or a way to power the keypad from outside.

Can you install one I bought?

Yes.
