Baltimore Landlord Guide to Rekeying Between Tenants
By Mega Lock And Key · MD Locksmith License #394 ·
Baltimore-area landlords should rekey between every tenant so previous keys stop working, and landlords with several units can rekey each unit to its own key plus a landlord master key, so one key opens every door they manage.
Why rekey at every turnover
You cannot know how many copies the last tenant made. Rekeying makes every old key useless without replacing the hardware.
Master keys for multiple units
A master key system gives each unit its own key while a landlord master opens all of them. It also lets you keep shared doors (front entry, laundry, storage) on a separate key.
Scheduling around turnover
- Rekey after the last tenant returns keys and before the new tenant moves in.
- Batch several units in one visit when leases end together.
- Keep a simple record of which key goes to which unit.
Keypads for short-term rentals
For short-term or frequently turning units, a keypad lock lets you change codes instead of keys.
