Commercial Master Key Systems Explained
By Mega Lock And Key · MD Locksmith License #394 ·
A commercial master key system lets each person carry one key that opens only the doors they need, while managers carry a master key that opens everything; restricted keyways such as Medeco or Mul-T-Lock keep those keys from being copied without your authorization.
How the levels work
- Change keys open one door or group, such as a single office.
- Master keys open every door in a section.
- Grand master opens everything in the building.
Planning a system
Start with the doors and the people: who needs which doors, and which doors only managers should open. Shared doors such as the front entry can be keyed so everyone's key opens them.
Restricted keyways
On a standard keyway, anyone can copy a key at a hardware store. High-security cylinders from brands like Medeco and Mul-T-Lock use restricted keys that can only be duplicated with authorization.
When staff change
Rekey the affected doors instead of replacing hardware. A well-planned system makes that a small job.
